Setting up a WhatsApp group is often the first idea couples have for collecting wedding photos. It's free and most people already use it. But it has some drawbacks you may not notice until after the wedding. Here's how it compares with a QR photo gallery.
Where a WhatsApp group works well
For a small wedding where everyone already uses WhatsApp, a group can be perfectly fine. It costs nothing, needs no setup and suits quick messages about timings and directions.
Where a WhatsApp group falls short
- Photo quality. Photos sent as standard messages are usually compressed, so what you receive is often not the original.
- Everyone has to join. Guests need the app and have to share their phone number with the whole group. Not everyone will be comfortable with that.
- Photos get lost in chat. Pictures are mixed in with messages, and saving them all afterwards can be slow.
- Notifications. A busy group can mean constant buzzing, so some guests will mute or leave it.
- No big-screen display. A group chat isn't designed to run as a slideshow at your reception.
How a QR photo gallery differs
With a QR gallery, guests scan one code and upload to a single shared gallery. On QRPix, they don't need an app or account and don't have to share their number. You receive the full-quality originals and can download everything as one ZIP.
You can also show the Live Gallery on a screen during the reception and remove any photo instantly. Video is available on the Gold and Custom plans.
Which should you choose?
The main difference is effort versus result. WhatsApp is free but leaves you with compressed photos scattered through a chat. A gallery has a one-off cost but keeps everything together in full quality.
Plenty of couples use both: a group for the practical messages, and a QR code for collecting the photos. You can compare what's included on our pricing page.
